Susan Call, MetLife Fellow

SCALLSusan Call is in her 14th year of teaching with experience in first, third, and fifth grades.

Currently she is a Title 1 Math Teacher.

Susan earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education as well as a Masters of Education from Brigham Young University.

She earned a second Master in Mathematics Education from George Mason University.

Research Title: Is Lesson Study an effective form of Staff Development? Research Year: 2009 Research Classification: Professional Development Research Summary: Completed 2 cycle of Lesson Study–Dec 2008 and Mar 2009–focused on Math Lesson study steps: Study, Plan, Conduct Lesson & Collect Data, Reflect 1st cycle–number sense 2nd cycle–2 digit addition All teacher participants changed teaching and planning approach as a result of the Lesson Study.

Research Title: Strategies Lab Intensive – helping students to develp perseverance and a healthy approach to problem-solving Research Year: 2008 Research Classification: Student Support/Enrichment Research Summary: We investigated the impact of the process we use with ThinkFun Games on second graders’ perseverance and approach to problem-solving. Our research showed that when given a challenging, open-ended math problem, after having gone through our eight-week “Strategies Lab Intensive”, second graders spent on average 10 minutes more attempting to solve the problem. They also increased in their use of strategies and ability to find the solution.
