Michelle Kem is in her ninth year teaching 2nd grade at a public elementary school outside Washington, D.C.
Prior to teaching, she spent fifteen years as a technology consultant with Accenture.
Michelle earned her Bachelor of Business Administration from William and Mary; her Master of Business Administration from The American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird).
She earned her teaching certification from George Mason University.

Research Title: Is Lesson Study an effective form of Staff Development? Research Year: 2009 Research Classification: Professional Development Research Summary: Completed 2 cycle of Lesson Study–Dec 2008 and Mar 2009–focused on Math Lesson study steps: Study, Plan, Conduct Lesson & Collect Data, Reflect 1st cycle–number sense 2nd cycle–2 digit addition All teacher participants changed teaching and planning approach as a result of the Lesson Study.
Research Title: Looking for a Better Way to Teach Punctuation Research Year: 2007 Research Classification: Curriculum Development Research Summary: Assessed student writing for Beginning, Developing or Secure use of periods and upper case letters. Based in part on the works of Janet Angelillo (A Fresh Approach to Punctuation, Scholastic Inc., NY, 2002) and Katie Wood Ray (Study Driven, Heinemann, NH, 2006), developed a Punctuation Unit based on exploration with 2 Literacy Collaborative teachers. The Punctuation Unit was implemented on a student sampling using pre and post tests. The hypothesis was proved as using this method increased student correct usage of periods and upper case letters.
