Research Title: Turning 3rd Graders into International Philanthropists Through Curriculum Integration: Planning Phase Research Year: 2008-2009 Research Classification: Curriculum Development Research Summary: Research Question: What are the best practices in using global micro-lending as a curriculum integration project for a 3rd grade classroom? This is the first year in a two year study. During this first year, we looked at micro-lending (lending small amounts of money to entrepreneurs in developing countries) as a means to provide authentic instruction which integrates Math, Geography, Social Studies, Technology and Language Arts curriculum objectives. We found several ways in which students can make micro-loans and track the results. We researched best practices for this type of lesson. I began by researching the idea of having my class micro-finance an entrepreneur in a developing country through the KIVA organization. I collaborated with resource teachers to create a more research driven and technology incorporated project. Throughout the process, I have created timelines, developed cross curriculum activities, and explored various software to support the project. I initially attempted to begin this project at the end of January 2009 with my then current classroom. I realized the scope of the project and expect skills required were too much at this point in the school year. I thus decided to postpone implementation of the project until next year.
